The UK's Plan to Cut Print Use by Half Could Increase Carbon Emissions
Green/Sustainability
The UK plans to cut paper consumption by 50% according to the 'Greening Government Commitments 2016-2020'. Two Sides, an organization advocating the sustainability of print, sent an open letter bringing up their concerns. 93% of paper consumption in the UK comes from Europe, which has a 72% recycling rate. Forests in Europe have grown by an area the size of Switzerland in the past 10 years. Two Sides also notes that e-waste is inevitable, and that in recent times the security of digital documents can't be guaranteed. The cloud took 684 billion kWh of electricity to run in 2011, which if treated as a country, would be the 6th highest in the world. Print once again proves its longevity and sustainability.
