Half of All Social Network Users Consider Taking A Break

July 12, 2013 -- According to a national survey on social media behavior, users of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and other social media networks, are “growing even more overwhelmed with juggling the increasing number of social networks and email accounts they manage.”
The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of social media management hub, MyLife.com finds:
- More than half (52%) of social network users have either taken or considered taking a “vacation” from one or more social networks in the past year.
- One in four (24%) plan to stop using or take a break from using at least one of their social networks this year. That number rises to 31% for those 18-34.
- Reasons cited for taking a break: social network updates weren't relevant or important (41%), and too much time being spent on social networks (32%)

TIME SPENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA
- More than four in 10 (42%) online adults manage multiple social networking profiles; this number that jumps to 61% for those 18-34.
- More than half of all respondents (51%) belong to more social networks or visit their networks more frequently than two years ago.
- More than a quarter (27%) of respondents check their social networks immediately upon waking in the morning.
- More than a third (35%) spend 31+ minutes per day on social networking sites and reading/responding to personal email.
WHO'S USING WHAT
- Men (28%) are more likely than women (21%) to currently be user of Twitter.
- Women (13%) are more likely than men (3%) to currently be a Pinterest user.
- Among millennials, men (16%) use Instagram more than women (11%).
- While YouTube is the third most popular social network among men (29%), just 10% of women have a YouTube account.
- LinkedIn adoption has increased among social networkers surveyed – 29% in 2013 vs. 22% in 2012.
About: The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of MyLife.com from May 31-June 4, 2013 among 2,084 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Data above is reflective of adults who are currently a member of more than one social networking site and currently have at least one email address.
